That story cannot be a full analogy for the 69 SL in the post. So while this was a very cool amp it was not a legit "64". I feel that the bottom line was always getting product out the door. This underscores just how much development was going on at Marshall during this time period after the Rose Morris deal was struck. Pots dated the 15th and 16th week of 1966! So this would put this amp certainly the first quarter to half way into 1966.
Drake PT and OT, no number stamps, voltage and ohm selectors mounted on bell covers. They are only a very general way of estimating date of mfg and too much emphasis is placed on s/n's IMO.Ĭase in point, recently in my shop was a supposed 64 JTM-45, white front panel, no back panel at all.

Serial numbers don't always match up with production dates either. The best you can do on these amps is to look for certain build aspects and parts used during a window of time. Very likely that another station made up the boards and then the assemblers grabbed an already made board and installed in the amp. These amps were assembled at different stations by different people.
Yes, you can get into a general "window" of when the amp was produced but my point is none of the production stopped on 31 Dec 68 and the new started on 1st Jan 69. Nothing is "exact" in these amps as far as a date when something started or finished. 0022uf for CH1 side.įlat lips boxes I say went into March 69 but certainly you have them being used in conjunction with the rolled lip variety during the first 5 months of 69. 022uf coupling caps in this amp look to be Wima Tropifoils. So for the seller to use the "solid board" being referenced to only 69 is flat wrong.Ĭertainly not a fake, but obviously has some replaced tube sockets, missing hardware, replaced pilot lamp. You will see both perf board and solid boards at the cusp of May/June 69. Even late plexi heads from May 69 had the solid non perf boards. You must look at several aspects of the build construction of an amp to "date" properly. I pretty much assume that any of these perf board models with the jumpers on top side of the board are 69 but this method of construction could have started sometime late 68.

The SL/A serial number suffix, the cluster of four caps between the PT and OT, the OT being rotated 90 degrees compared to an actual 68 100w head, the bogus date on the inspection tag and even the pot code being late 68.which means the amp was assembled "after" that time period, which could easily be months after. Many on this thread have brought up excellent points about this specific Super Lead head which is obviously from 1969, not 1968. I would say in general most folks selling a Marshall amp and many owners of old plexi heads "think" they are older than what they actually are. That pinstripe grill cloth is either a reproduction or is perhaps from some NOS grill cloth they acquired over the years.Īdd some forged reproduction Plexi Panels, a few other bits and pieces, & VIOLA!!! You've now got yourself a genuine, authentic, "all original" 18 watt mini bluesbreaker that sells for over 3 times the value of the amp that it originally started out as! Genius I tell ya, pure genius!!! Most pieces for the circuit board conversion would have been made from correct or close to period correct spare parts that they have accumulated over the years. In this example Many of the components are vintage and original, just not original to the amp.įor example those transformers are taken right out of a vintage 18 watt Watkins Dominator, where as real Marshall 18 watters would have Radio Spares trannies. Anyway, what this amp is in reality is a late 60's early 70's Marshall Popular 10 watt 2x10 combo that has been lashed up into the much more expensive and rare 18 watt combo, as both amps used the exact same chassis and the exact same cabinets. I remember this amp very well when Justin was selling it through his music ground shop 15 or so years ago, and at the time I emailed him several times with questions regarding its authenticity. Right now on Ebay there is a prime example of Justin Harrison's (Aka Music Ground, AKA Hanks guitar shop, AKA whatever other store front they are using at the moment) many lash ups that was originally sold by them as a rare "All original" 18 watt combo.
